Julia Beck, Fort Wayne - Julia is an assembler at General Motors. She joined AC4O on Feb 19th. Knowing how important it is to get Barack's stance on the issues out to voters, Julia was empowered to make additional tool kits for the next meeting. She came in with nearly 70 kits for new members.

Aisha Hallman, Fort Wayne - Aisha is an employee of the Dupont Branch of the Allen County Public Library. Knowing she had some time to enter data that we collected, Aisha stepped up and asked if there was any data to enter. We had just received more than 50 supporter cards in addition to new group sign ups at our last meeting. She took the stack and entered each name, email address and phone number to help complete our group information.

Stacy Banks , Fort Wayne (Chicago)
Stacy Banks is originally from Chicago and was a member of Barack's Church Trinity UCC. She stepped in where she felt she could help just like many volunteers. The volunteers in the Obama campaign are given ideas of what things need done, but are empowered to do whatever they feel they can to help. Stacy made enough copies to create 100 MORE tool kits for volunteers to spread the word about Barack Obama and his stance on the issues. Stacy continues to be active at meetings and is considering further participation by being a State Delegate.

Robin Simunek, Fort Wayne - Robin didn't let a scheduling conflict slow her participation down for the group. Although she couldn't attend the last meeting, she baked a fresh batch of banana bread for callers that attended the phone banking for Ohio voters. Nothing makes volunteers happier than FOOD. This was Robin's idea on how she could make a difference for the morale of our volunteers. Don't you want to join us?

Roger McNett, New Haven - Roger host the site ourdems.org. Knowing that AC4O may need a place to host messages about events and tasks, Roger stepped up and volunteered his skills to program a page just for us! He is constantly making sure we have everything we need posted and is wonderful about making suggestions and providing ideas on getting the word out about AC4O. Roger is a huge asset in our communications for the group!

Reading this web site can be good - even helpful, but doing so will not make change happen.
Only you can do that.

People generally take up arms and fight only if they have strong reasons to do so.
If you want to deal with them successfully, you must first find out what their problems are.
It is only until you deal with those problems that you can expect them to lay down their arms.
To fight them does not solve the innitial problems - and it is always much more expensive.

John Edwards made a surprise appearance with Barack Obama in Grand Rapids, Mich., as the Illinois senator campaigns in a critical general election battleground state. Edwards, who received a thunderous ovation when Obama introduced him to a crowd of several thousand, said, "brothers and sisters, we must come together as Democrats" to defeat McCain. "We are here tonight because the Democratic voters have made their choice, and so have I."

Edwards gives long-awaited endorsement to Obama

By CHUCK BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Democrat John Edwards endorsed former rival Barack Obama on Wednesday, a move designed to help solidify support for the party's likely presidential nominee even as Hillary Rodham Clinton refuses to give up her long-shot candidacy.

Edwards made a surprise appearance with Obama in Grand Rapids, Mich., as the Illinois senator campaigns in a critical general election battleground state.

The endorsement came a day after Clinton defeated Obama by more than 2-to-1 in the West Virginia primary. The loss highlighted Obama's challenge in winning over the "Hillary Democrats" — white, working-class voters who also supported Edwards in significant numbers before he exited the race in late January.

Edwards, who received a thunderous ovation when Obama introduced him to a crowd of several thousand, said, "brothers and sisters, we must come together as Democrats" to defeat McCain. "We are here tonight because the Democratic voters have made their choice, and so have I."

He said Obama "stands with me" in a fight to cut poverty in half within 10 years.Edwards Obama

Edwards also praised Clinton, saying "we are a stronger party" because of her involvement, and "we're going to have a stronger nominee in the fall because of her work."

He said Clinton is a "woman who is made of steel. She is a leader in this country not because of her husband but because of what she has done."

Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said in a statement, "We respect John Edwards, but as the voters of West Virginia showed last night, this thing is far from over."

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator and the 2004 vice presidential nominee, finished second to Obama in the Iowa caucus in early January before coming in third in the following three contests. He dropped out in New Orleans, the location a reminder of his attention to poverty.

Both Obama and Clinton immediately asked Edwards for his endorsement, but he stayed mum for more than four months. His endorsement would have carried far more clout if he had made it in February, when the Obama-Clinton outcome was very much in doubt.

A person close to Edwards, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he wanted to get involved now to begin unifying the party. Obama also signed on to Edwards' anti-poverty initiative, which he launched Tuesday with the goal of reducing poverty in the United States by half within 10 years.

When he made his decision, Edwards didn't even tell many of his former top advisers because he wanted to inform Clinton personally, said the person close to him. Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, who has said she thinks Clinton has the superior health care plan, did not travel with him to Michigan and is not part of the endorsement.

David "Mudcat" Saunders, a chief adviser for Edwards on rural affairs during his presidential campaign, said the endorsement should take some sting out of Obama's resounding loss in West Virginia.

"For Barack Obama, I think he ought to kiss Johnny Edwards on the lips to kill this 41-point loss," Saunders said.

Edwards waged a scrappy underdog campaign for the Democratic nomination, always outshone by the historic nature of Obama possibly being the first black nominee and Clinton the first woman. He continued to campaign after the family disclosed that Elizabeth's breast cancer had returned.

Obama has 1,887 delegates, leaving him 139 delegates short of the 2,026 needed to clinch the nomination. Clinton has 1,718 delegates, according to the latest tally by The Associated Press.

Edwards has 19 pledged delegates won in three states: Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Most of the those delegates have already been selected, meaning they are technically free to support whomever they choose at the party's national convention, regardless of Edwards' endorsement.

Associated Press writers Nedra Pickler and Stephen Ohlemacher in Washington and Gary D. Robertson in Raleigh, N.C., contributed to this report

Barack Obama Wins Allen County

With 294 of 294 precincts reporting in Allen County, Barack Obama has 56% of the vote as compared to 44% for Hillary Clinton.

Hillary Clinton Wins Indiana by less than 2%

. . With a much smaller margin than expected, at 09:30 Wednesday morning, Indiana (with 5215 of 5230 precincts counted) - gave Obama 49.1% and Clinton 50.9%

Talking to poll workers, there was an extremely high amount of crossover votes from Republicans voting for Democrats. We do not know what effect that had on the percentages because different people did it for different reasons, but we suspect some were meant to hurt Obama and and others were by woman to support another Hillary Clinton.

Jill Long Thompson Narrowly Wins
The Democratic Vote For Governor

In the end, Long Thompson won by a fraction of one-percent of the vote over Indianapolis architect Jim Schellinger.

======

In 2004, there were a total of 8,657 votes cast in the Democratic primary in Allen County. The GOP posted 21,649 votes.

This year, the GOP posted 20,122 (1,527 less than in 2004). However, the Democratic vote increased by 53,877 to a whopping 62,534.

Barack Obama was in Fort Wayne on Sunday
At the Fort Wayne Family Picnic with the Obama Family

Obama speaking

Barack Obama was at Headwaters Park Pavilion on Sunday, May 4 with Michelle and their girls for an old fashioned family potluck picnic. There were close to 3,000 people there for food and family fun. Most were seated at tables where they could eat if they got food earlier enough. Otherwise, they had to wait until after Senator Obama had left. Dear Sweet Rachel shook hands with both Barack and Michelle Obama while I was penned in the press section. The secret service was everywhere - even in the picture above- and everyone who entered was checked and swept by a wand before they could get into the pavilion.

As a volunteer in the press area it was informative to talk to some I knew and a lot that I did not know. It was amazing to learn about what they do and how different services interconnect with each other - like the Associated Press. It is interesting to watch them as they set up, do their job and get on their way - many going to Indianapolis for the evening Jefferson - Jackson dinner with both Senators Obama and Clinton.

The Obamas were introduced by former Fort Wayne mayor Graham Richard who gave a very appropriate and enthusiastic list of reasons to vote for Barack Obama. Michelle Obama spoke about her husband and the campaign and did the actual introduction of Sen. Obama. Then Barack Obama spoke and, while it was his basic stump speech, it was awesome. Later he spent some quality time with some of those who came to hear him speak. A video of the speech is below and it may change if we find others.

You will find more great up close and personal pictures on Left of Centrist.

We saw Sylvia Smith there and this is what she wrote for the Journal Gazette.

Ron Paul favors Obama over McCain

In an interview on The Situation Room, Paul told Wolf Blitzer that endorsing Sen. John McCain, the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee, “would really confuse” his supporters “because they know we have a precise program and we have to defend that program.” Instead, Paul favors Sen. Barack Obama because of positions on foreign policy. Read More

Michelle Obama Was At North Side High School

Michelle Obama

April 25 - Michelle Obama as at North Side High School on Friday afternoon to a crowd of nearly 500 for more than an hour about her husband, Barack Obama. She spoke of his hopes, history and his sense of responsibility. Michelle said he was taught to treat others with decency and respect because you never know when you are going to need somebody.

She said he has proven he could be taken seriously by raising enough money and putting together a campaign organization.

We have seen in Fort Wayne, his campaign structure is extremely well coordinated, efficient and gets things done. The simple observation by Our Dems is that if he runs the country using many of the ways he has run his campaign, he will have great potential to become an serious, effective and compassionate president.

“We've lost sight of the fact that we are one another's brothers' and sisters' keepers in this nation. We have to prepare to sacrifice something big for the greater good. In order to do that, you have to feel some faith and trust and inspiration in our leadership. I don't think there's anyone else in this race who's going to be able to unify this country, who's going to be able to change the way politics is done, who's going to bring people together who never thought they had anything common before and who's going to do it in a way that's decent and honest.”

Barack Obama is a man who succeeds despite injustice and unfairness, Michelle said. He would be a president who would fight to eliminate some of the struggles of hard-working families. She said people who work hard all their lives ought to be able to put their feet up in retirement, but they can't because they can't afford health care or their pensions dry up. Kids who work hard and get good grades in school ought to be able to go to college, but often they can't because it's too expensive.

Michelle believes the way the country is going is everybody together in unity. That's one of the things she likes about Obama. He wants to bring us all together,” he said. “I just think he's a better candidate to include everybody, not because of his race or color. His message of ‘everybody is one."

Advisors to Senator Obama host Economic Policy Town Hall in Fort Wayne

Advisors
Bracken Hendricks - - Bob Wisbord (sp?) - - Carlos Monje - - Ed Montogomery - - Graham Richard

As part of the effort to reach out to the concerns of the citizens of Allen County, Senator Barack Obama’s Economic Advisors hosted a Town Hall at the Local 213 Union Hall this Sunday, April 20 at 3:45. Well over 100 people came to hear policy ideas that Barack Obama plans to put in place when he becomes President.

The group included leaders in American Economic Policy such as the former Secretary and COO of the U.S. Department of Labor, Ed Montgomery, the Senior Fellow at the Center of American Progress, Bracken Hendricks and Senator Obama’s own Deputy National Policy Director Carlos Monje. Another guest was Bob Wisbord (sp?) and former Fort Wayne mayor, Graham Richards joined the panel.

Two MembersEach panelist took a turn telling how his area of expertise fit into the plan that Senator Obama is building to improve the ways our government works to tackle the problems that America faces. Then they listened to concerns and answered questions from the audience. While the subjects were varied and the plans seemed sound and balanced, it would take too much space to share all our notes. However, here are some summaries that will demonstrate their concerns and how they would make things better.

Much of today's business community is more concerned with transferring wealth rather than building wealth. The panelists were not happy with corporate executives who are paid extremely high wages for stripping companies that are not creating wealth. We currently reward employers for the wrong things. Tax breaks should only go to employers who work to keep their factories and workers in this country, respecting workers' right to organize and innovating to build the economy.

Their belief was that we need to use locally driven ideas - not top down directions. A broader coalition of a wide variety of people are needed to address problems in our country. This is especially important in developing new ideas and methods that will help cities and local governments work with the Federal Government to get the right things done.

Education reform is a top priority and "No Child Left Behind" needs to be left behind so that we can really help kids from pre school to post secondary education. School issues are an important part of the Obama plan.

The United States needs to use public investment to help create private opportunities and this includes both energy and the environment. Energy efficiency cannot be outsourced. Billions of dollars will flow into energy saving companies and we need to capture that investment in this country because American ingenuity can create green collar jobs. As with all business, smart subsidies can help get things started and then government can withdraw as the business develops and can stand on it's own, creating jobs through innovation and creating more wealth.

There was much concern about the flaws in the credit card industry as well as the corrupt practices that led to our current home loan chaos that is causing thousands to lose their homes. We should not shy away from levying stiff penalties for companies that use dishonest tactics to harm consumers.

All in all, as one audience member said, it was a panel that had depth and talent along with a lot of fun. If that will be how a Barack Obama administration would be run, it would certainly be a pleasant change for the better.

Obama's Indiana Tour - The Video

Over the weekend, Barack wrapped up his three-day bus tour of Indiana, and it was an amazing trip. For three days, all across Indiana, he met with folks who are hungry for change - but frustrated by a politics that never seems to listen to them. His team put together a 7 1/2 minute video of the tour. Watch it and you'll see the excitement on the ground in Indiana:

Harvard Law Professor Spoke for Obama at the IPFW Science Building

OgletreeCharles Ogletree is introduced by Max Montesino of IPFW to the almost 30 guests who came to hear him speak for Barack Obama. Ogletree, the Harvard Law School Jesse Climenko Professor of Law and Vice Dean for the Clinical Programs, a prominent legal theorist who has made an international reputation by taking a hard look at complex issues of law. He spoke to Fort Wayne residents and later to the Third District Democrats on Saturday, April 12th

Ogletree has known Barack Obama for twenty years, having had both Barack and his wife as students at Harvard and he has remained a close friend ever since. Sometimes as a teacher you have students who are special and he knows that Obama was such a person. He talked about many of the issues that informed voters already know, but added that Obama's exceptionally good instincts, assessment and personal skills make him and ideal candidate for president.

The IPFW meeting was in the Science Building and was a Town Hall forum. Ogletree, ranked as one of the top 100 lawyers in the United States, is unconditionally supporting this candidacy because of his extensive knowledge and respect of Barack Obama.

"A More Perfect Union" . . . Tue, 18 Mar 2008

Today Senator Obama made an historical speech. He confronted the issues of race as they stand today in our country. He addressed not just the words of Rev. Wright, but the feelings of everyday Americans.

Senator Obama's words are more than speech. They are ideas, thoughts and plans for a future with a BETTER America. A United America. He has been a unifier of this Nation. He has the ability and is THE candidate who WILL continue to heal this Nation through his work, his plans and through the multi-cultural, ethnically diverse and economically diverse base of his supporters like us.

I know that many of you may be worried about the state of the race given the media coverage of Rev. Wright's words over the last five days. Worrying is not for us. Strategizing is not for us. Education and being informed, however, is our job as supporters of Senator Obama. We should be prepared to answer questions and more importantly send people information to do their own research and develop their own opinions about Senator Obama and his true feelings as a PROUD American.

Read, see and hear the speech

- - Sofia

Read the March 16, Q & A with Sen. Barack Obama by the Indy Star

* * Barack Obama said Saturday in Plainfiled that he expects Hillary Clinton to win Pennsylvania. That’s the only primary between now and the Indiana primary on May 6. North Carolina is also May 6 and is also seen as a Clinton state. Indiana is now more important than ever for Barack Obama.

Obama did newspaper interviews before his town hall meeting Saturday and television interviews afterward. He also took time out to meet with local supporters and even invited some neutral Democrats as well as party leaders who support Clinton to be on hand. That's why Bill Clinton is coming and why Hillary will be in Indiana on Thursday. There is no more important time to get out there and make a difference.

Click Here - listen to Barack Obama in Plainfield, Indiana on Saturday, March 15

Fri, 14 Mar
I know that everyone is anxious to see our candidate in person and to hear him speak. Unfortunately the event in the Plainfield High School gymnasium on Saturday, March 15 is closed. Although the tickets to the event are free, the space is very limited. The town hall forums are much different than a rally and they were full VERY quickly.

Now, all of that being said there are a few things you can do now.

Get involved this Saturday! Join South Central Indiana Volunteers as we add visibility and action to the Plainfield visit.
1) Go to Indy anyway, make home made signs, stand outside of the venue and chant and cheer for Senator Obama. Show him the support he has in Allen County AC4O!!
2) You can think positively that a rally has to be sometime in the future. I don't know this for fact, but there has to be a rally in the works sometime in the next six weeks. Don't discount Fort Wayne as a location - we ARE the second largest city in the state!
3) Get people to sign supporter cards. By the sounds of my phone ringing off the hook with questions about the event, surely people are asking you too. Make sure they have signed a supporter card for Barack and invite them to the next meeting.
4) Make sure your friends, family and collegues are registered to vote. Photocopy the forms in your kits and get them filled out.
5) Spread the word the the Obama campaign is coming!

Please email Sofia with any questions.

Obama 'wins Mississippi primary' - Barack Obama has beaten rival Hillary Clinton to win the Democratic primary election in the state of Mississippi, according to US media projections.

Exit polls suggest he picked up the overwhelming support of the state's many African-American voters. Mississippi has 33 delegates to the August convention where the party will choose its White House candidate.

If you cannot attend our next meeting, let me know if you can do any of the following and I can assign to you. I know life keeps moving and this is a month away on some of these tasks, but I need an estimate to provide the national campaign:

1) Can you house staff/volunteers from out of town when they arrive and for what period of time. They are estimating staff will be here from April 1-May 7 and volunteers will be in and out during that period. If you can host volunteers, please let me know how many you can host and what dates.

2) Can you provide a committment to bringing food into the main office. There will be an office here that volunteers will be in and out each day as well as staff filling it all day. Food can be homemade or carry in, can be snacks or meals, can include bottled water etc. -whatever you can do. If you can do this let me know and I will develop a calendar for the 30+ day period and assign day(s) to each that say yes. Please let me know how many days you are willing to do - whatever you can do is helpful.

3) What days will you be available and what times to make phone calls? Are there days of the week that are better? How many can you do. Tell me what you can handle and we can make a calendar. This is open day and evenings.

4) What days will you be available and what times to canvass (knock on doors)? Are there days of the week that are better? Tell me what you can handle and we can make a calendar. This is open day and evenings and you will not be alone.

5) If you are willing to be a PRECINCT captain for the campaign, what is your precinct #? Let me know along with your precinct #. You can check it here you can also make sure you are registered to vote www.indianavoters.com

6) If you are willing to be a BLOCK captain for the campaign, what block will you work and what is the precinct number? Let me know along with your precinct #. You can check it here you can also make sure you are registered to vote www.indianavoters.com

Obama FlagLastly please provide me with any ideas/opportunities you have for us to table. We will be starting this in the next week, so we would like your ideas on that. Once we have the events scheduled, I will make a plea for people to work the event.

Please respond ASAP on these if you cannot come to the meeting Wednesday. Put in the subject line ASSIGN ME

One more thing... please please join AC4O on the mybo site. You can do so here. We had the story run last night and today about our group on Indiana's News Center and they said we have 50+ members. I wanted everyone to know that we have received a call from Indiana's News Center about a story they want to do on us. We forwarded that on to the Chicago office and they have given us the okay for Tricia and/or I to talk to them.

Look for her in the next day or two to have a segment about us.

Didn't want you to be surprised knowing how the NO press stuff is in the campaign.

Allen County 4 Obama is awesome.

Do you think we can make an impact? Yes, we can and yes we are!

Despite the abysmal weather conditions, we had nearly 30 members of our group gather at La Margarita! Another 19 Obama supporters gathered at Los Lomas.
We are already making a difference: at the La Margarita event

* we registered 4 NEW VOTERS at the restaurant;
* Stacey brought materials to put together 100 packets of information about Senator Obama and the campaign for NEW MEMBERS that join our efforts;
* We've heard from Fran and Bruce about their canvasing efforts in OHIO
* Many AC4O spoke on how they are reaching out via phone calls;
* To top it off Stacy has found a contact that will set up a tabling event for us at IPFW;
* We can't for get Robyn who dropped off some home made banana bread to raise the spirits of the phone callers

YES WE CAN

These are just a few of the contributions we have made so far. We will bring about the change we seek. Congratulations to AC4O, we have only just begun. Get more to join our group. Have them contact Sofia or Tricia and get active in the campaign for CHANGE.

It is our time to lead.
Tricia
