Obama’s Use of Complete Sentences Stirs Controversy
Stunning Break with Last Eight Years

In the first two weeks since the election, President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over the past eight years through his controversial use of complete sentences, political observers say.

Millions of Americans who watched Mr. Obama's appearance on CBS' "Sixty Minutes" on Sunday witnessed the president-elect's unorthodox verbal tick, which had Mr. Obama employing grammatically correct sentences virtually every time he opened his mouth.

But Mr. Obama's decision to use complete sentences in his public pronouncements carries with it certain risks, since after the last eight years many Americans may find his odd speaking style jarring.
According to presidential historian Davis Logsdon of the University of Minnesota, some Americans might find it "alienating" to have a President who speaks English as if it were his first language.

"Every time Obama opens his mouth, his subjects and verbs are in agreement," says Mr. Logsdon. "If he keeps it up, he is running the risk of sounding like an elitist."

The historian said that if Mr. Obama insists on using complete sentences in his speeches, the public may find itself saying, "Okay, subject, predicate, subject predicate - we get it, stop showing off."
The President-elect's stubborn insistence on using complete sentences has already attracted a rebuke from one of his harshest critics, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

"Talking with complete sentences there and also too talking in a way that ordinary Americans like Joe the Plumber and Tito the Builder can't really do there, I think needing to do that isn't tapping into what Americans are needing also," she said.

May we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion.

Sarah Palin Is Caught on Radio Talk Show Prank 091102

Canadian comedian, Marc Antoine Audette, succeeded in convincing Sarah Palin that he was the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy. Audette used a rather comical, exaggerated French accent during a six-minute chat that was aired on a Montreal radio station. Amongst other topics, he chatted with Palin about politics, Carla Bruni and a possible joint hunting trip.

Third District Congressional Debate 091031

08 Debate

There was a Debate between three candidates running for Indiana 3rd District Congress on Friday, October 31, 2008, at the John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center on the IPFW campus. The debate began at 1:30 PM and lasted one hour. The candidates were Michael Montagano (Dem), Bill Larsen (Lib) and Mark Souder (Rep). Mark Mellinger and Heather Herron from WANE TV, Channel 15 in Fort Wayne were the moderators.

Read what Sylvia Smith said in the Journal Gazette. In our opinion, Mike Montagano held up well considering the past experiences of Mark Souder and the negative adds in the campaign. Souder has a long tradition of sticking by his political friends and Mike Montagano shared how he would work to help the middle class in this current struggle to pick the next congressman to represent the third district. We find it amazing that Mark Souder has been critical of the Montagano family, a close and wonderful family that we have come to know and appreciate, when long ago, he used his own mother to condemn his opponent in an ad so that he win the election.

The debate will be shown on channel 15, Sunday at 11:00 AM and on public radio Monday evening. (You can download the .wav audios below, each one is about 20 minutes long). Or you can watch the debate here. (that would be my choice - and you can click - after help - to fill your computer screen)

The questions asked were:

audio 1

1. What were the candidates comments about the bailout of the banks?
2. What life and political experiences have you had to prepare you for the job of congressman?
3. Has the campaign been negative?

audio 2

4. Souder has gotten earmarks for our district. Would you continue to work to get earmarks?
5. Explain your philosophy in helping the people of the Third District.
6. Why are your positions on energy independence better than your opponents?

audio 3

7. What are your ideas for better health care?
8. Closing Comments by Mark Souder, Mike Montagano and Bill Larsen.

Some may question why our country is so divided. They may ask why people are so mistrustful of others who differ in their judgments. To get an answer, just look at the contest for the president of our wonderful country what is going on in that contest. We have two candidates, both with great, but different, credentials and who both have hopes for the future of this country. It is such a shame that in this contest, there are so many fellow citizens with misconceptions, distrust and hateful beliefs that grow opinions that are so different than ours. In all our experiences, we have found that democrats, on the whole, are kinder, more accepting of diversity and more concerned with our environment than Republicans seem to be. Democrats also appear to be the ones who appreciate the uniqueness of each and every person. I suspect that is why I am a Democrat. I wish others could appreciate the inclusiveness that we hold in our acceptance and love for this great country and our appreciation of each and every person.

Referendum #1

On the ballot this November there will be an important question regarding the assessing responsibilities for your property. Referendum #1, will ask "do you want your township assessing responsibilities to be transfered to the County Assessor". I hope you will vote "NO", and here is why:

There is no change to the amount of work that must be done. It will take just as many people to complete the work. (no dollars saved) Assessing must always be completed by people who are "State Certified" per Indiana Code.

The bottom line is: The same number of people will be needed to do the same amount of work, it's just an issue of which office the work will be done in. What you have to ask yourself is: who will serve me/my property best?

Allen County has a total of 150,000 properties or parcels, of those, 49,000 are in Wayne Township. Out of a total of 92 Counties in Indiana, Wayne Township has more parcels than 74 of those Counties. Needless to say, that is a lot of work and a huge area to be responsible for. I have willingly taken on that responsibility, surrounding myself with knowledgeable, efficient, State certified individuals, with over 70 years of combined experience, who want to continue serving the people of Wayne Township. Each voter will have to decide if they will be "best served" by an office where the elected official and majority of staff lives in that Township as your neighbor or by people who just live in the same County. Are you"best served" as being one of 150,000 or 49,000. I believe we have done a fantastic job in the past year and a half. I believe we have served the property owners of Wayne Township fairly, efficiently and accurately. I am asking you for the opportunity to continue the work we have started. If you agree, please vote "NO" to keep your township.

Beverly Zuber, Wayne Township Assessor

Even if you know he's a fake, it's a little shocking to see Gerardo Puisseaux close-up.

Look-a-likeThe Cuban immigrant to Miami is a dead ringer for Barack Obama, from the broad smile to the close-cropped hair. He was a construction worker in Miami until about six weeks ago, when he hooked up with online Spanish-language news channel America TeVe (www.americateve.com). Since then, he's been going where Obama goes and causing a stir in each location.

"We make something like a reality show," he said Monday evening, his thick accent proving he's not a soundalike. "We walk in the street with the people." He draws attention everywhere he goes.

"Sometimes I get tired because everybody stopping me, a lot of questions, sometimes political questions," he says. "I am not Obama."

About a year ago, Puisseaux realized the resemblance and responds, "A fan? Obama? I love him."

The similarities between John Edwards' infidelity and John McCain's make us wonder. After denouncing John Edwards as unworthy of public office for having cheated on his ill wife, none of the conservatives have come up with a decent explanation of why McCain's divorce was any less despicable. Why Am I A Democrat in 2008?

Governor Mitch Daniels

Governor Mitch Daniels is quoted to the effect that the state lottery was created for the purpose of funding education and, he says, it should return to its intended purpose. That was the case in Illinois but not Indiana.

The Hoosier Lottery proceeds originally went to one-time capital expenses (fire stations, bridges, schools) administered through the now-defunct Build Indiana Fund. In the legislative debate on the lottery bill there was discussion about how lotteries are too unpredictable to devote the profits to education and so the money was used for other purposes.

Directing lottery money to education now is an idea worth debating, but the record should show it was a loser in the first lottery debate.

Stats Don't Lie: Indiana Lost 16,500 Jobs In July - Jennifer Wagner

The Guv has been traipsing across Indiana these past two weeks talking about expansions and making other economic development announcements. Perhaps he knew this news was coming today (emphasis added):

Between June 2008 and July 2008 nonfarm payroll employment increased in 14 states and the District of Columbia, and decreased in 36 states. The largest employment increases were recorded in Texas (+17,700), Ken- tucky (+11,300), Kansas (+8,800), the District of Columbia (+6,700), and Tennessee (+5,700). The District of Columbia posted the largest over-the-month percentage increase in employment (+1.0 percent), fol- lowed by South Dakota (+0.9 percent), Kansas and Kentucky (+0.6 percent each), and North Dakota (+0.3 percent). The largest employment decreases occurred in Florida (-21,400), Georgia (-18,900), Indiana (-16,500), California (-14,900), and Arizona (-14,100). Alaska experienced the largest over-the-month percentage decline in employment (-0.7 percent), followed by Indiana (-0.6 percent), and Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii, and Utah (-0.5 percent each).

Yeah, our economy's really heading in the right direction.

For those of you playing along at home, here are a few additional fun facts:

• Between July 2007 and July 2008, Indiana's unemployment rate jumped from 4.4% to 6.3%, an increase of 1.9%

• According to figures released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, Indiana was 44th in the nation last year in terms of GDP growth. [BEA, 2007 GDP Report]

• Between February 2005 and July 2008, Mitch Daniels has created only 20,500 jobs for the state of Indiana.

• Under the leadership of Gov. Joe Kernan - between September, 2003 and January, 2005 - Indiana gained 52,500 jobs.

Unfit for Publication

One of the most vile smear peddlers of the 2004 election has found a new target.

Jerome Corsi just published a new book full of rehashed distortions and the same old lies about Barack Obama, and the right-wing noise machine is in full gear promoting it.

In 2004, Corsi helped launch the Swift Boat smear campaign with a book of distortions and lies he wrote about John Kerry.

It’s up to you to spread the truth, so here it is. Obama posted some of the facts about Corsi and his desperate fabrications in this 40 page PDF book. A LITTLE RESEARCH DISPROVES EVEN CORSI’S MOST BASIC CLAIMS

Download the book in PDF - it is well worth the read . . .

Birth Control is NOT Abortion

Can you imagine living in a place where birth control is considered an "abortion" and health insurers won't cover it? Where even rape victims are denied emergency contraception?

It seems unbelievable, but the Bush Administration is quietly trying to redefine "abortion" to include birth control. The Houston Chronicle says this could wipe out dozens of state laws that protect women's reproductive freedom and protect rape victims. Access to basic health care for millions of women would be jeopardized. And it's being pushed as a "rule change"—meaning, it doesn't need congressional approval.

Here's what some others are saying about this proposal:
The draft regulation would define birth control as abortion...it could deny access to critical family planning for women across the country.—Letter signed by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and 26 other senators.

The draft rule could void laws in 27 states that require insurance companies to provide birth control coverage for women requesting it [and] laws in 14 states requiring that rape victims receive counseling and access to emergency, day-after contraceptives.—Houston Chronicle editorial

The administration needs to stop playing word games with women's health and state clearly they will reject any regulations that will undermine women's access to basic health care.—Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

[It's] a spectacular act of complicity with the religious right... - RH Reality Check, Information and Analysis for Reproductive Health
The birth control pill, the IUD, and emergency contraception might all become unavailable—illegal—as a result.—Brigid Riley, executive director of a Minnesota teen pregnancy prevention organization

Send a loud message to Secretary Leavitt that birth control is NOT abortion. click here or write a letter.

John McCain and the Republican National Committee are trying to convince you that you've been swept up and tricked into wanting change.

They want you to believe that everything is just fine -- that we need to stay the course and elect someone who's voted with George Bush 95% of the time.

To sell this ridiculous idea, McCain and the RNC are using huge checks from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs to run negative ads attacking Barack Obama and the millions of volunteers and donors who have joined this campaign for change.

While supporters like you are out knocking on doors, registering new voters, and organizing in your local communities, our opponents are not even trying to match your efforts. Instead, they're spending millions to spread the smear that Barack is just a "celebrity" and that our grassroots movement is just a bunch of mindless fans.

So who is John McCain really attacking? - - - - He is attacking you, me, us and our friends at work, at church and everywhere.

Barack Obama has no substance? He is only a celebrity? He is just a good speaker?

If you could see first hand how he runs a campaign, his experience in Chicago politics and what he has done for the people he cares about, his strong economic and other supporters, you would know that he can run a country because he has a vision and the skills and the good judgment to make that vision happen. If you recall how the Bush administration, the one with so much experience, has messed up this country, you can easily determine that some experience is bad experience. The need for change can be best brought by Barack Obama and this is the time for hope in America.

Mitch Daniels - Don't Believe the Hype!

Do you know how much Republican tax breaks and subsidies to Big Oil are costing our community?

Oil companies are slated to get billions of dollars in taxpayer handouts in the next few years. This is a gigantic missed opportunity—we could instead invest in wind, solar, energy efficiency and other clean energy projects that will boost local economies and help reduce our dependence on oil.

A brand new report coming out this week will show the cost to Indiana of Republicans' Big Oil giveaways—and we've got to get the word out. There will be rallies for clean energy on Tuesday, August 19th. At each rally you will see local data and make sure voters know exactly how much the GOP's Big Oil handouts will cost them, and what it would mean for Indiana if we put that money into clean energy instead.

For years, John McCain and the Republicans have funneled billions of our tax dollars to oil companies via tax breaks and subsidies—often at the expense of clean energy projects and green job development. John McCain's new tax plan includes almost $4 billion in tax cuts for Big Oil. This commitment to oil company profits over clean energy progress hurts us at the pump, and it's hurting our local economies.

There is a better way: invest the billions earmarked for Big Oil subsides in a clean energy future instead. That won't happen if John McCain and other Republicans are in power.

We think these new state-by-state dollar figures will surprise people. At the Rallies for Clean Energy, we'll use this data to show people just how much McCain and the Republicans will cost us.

Then, as she suspended her compain, she congratulated Barack Obama and not only endorsed him, but promised to "throw my full support behind him." NOTE: There’s some indications that the Barack Obama campaign may take Indiana more seriously in November than have other recent Democratic candidates for President. While they previously have downplayed the chances - it appears that attitudes have changed and Indiana just might land in the Democratic column this year. Yes we can - if we all work for it. . . . . .

Sen. Obama doesn't wear a lapel pin every day, but he does weat a bracelet that belongs to a soldier deployed in Iraq that the soldier's mother gave him. Even though he is constantly ridiculed about his Patriotism due to the lack of a lapel pin, I never hear him say anything about the bracelet because it just isn't about that. He is a gentleman and he is respectful.

Information About the Indiana State Democratic Convention
- Deb Morrone

Allen County has filled our allotment of delegates to the Indiana State Democratic Convention--AND we currently have a waiting list. Allen County will be sending 110 (our max allotment) of the 220 total Third Congressional District delegates to the convention!

This will be an exciting event--we have a great mix of first time and experienced delegates. Allen Co. also has several outstanding candidates running for many of the National Delegate slots. We have people running in the District Delegate Race, in the At Large Delegate race, in the Party Leader Elected Official Race, etc. We wish them ALL well.

The convention is the evening of Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21 at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott. An agenda has now been posted online at www.indems.org. It is very informative-try to take a look at it prior to the conference.

For those of you with National Delegate aspirations, there is a link to very informative site detailing what to expect, etc. If you are elected, you will get many more details from the Party.

Delegates: PLEASE be sure to attend the next breakfast meeting on June 14. We will have all up to date information for you there. Also, we have had many inquiries about car pools to the event. Just after the breakfast meeting we will provide you and opportunity to get together with other delegates and explore sharing transportation. Whether you plan to go down on Friday OR Saturday, you should be able to find someone willing to share a ride! (Remember, parking is in excess of $25 and gas may be Over the $4.00 mark...this may be a great idea for many!!)

If you plan to stay over on Friday at the Marriot, remember to mention the convention to get the reduced rate. (A link to the Marriott is also on the INDEMS.ORG site) Some convention-goers have had great success with the travel websites and have been able to find 4-star downtown hotels at a much lower rate)

The Third District Caucus begins at 9:00 am on Saturday!

Clinton to say Obama has delegates to secure nomination

The Associated Press reported has reported that Hillary Clinton will say on Tuesday night that her rival Barack Obama has enough delegates to secure the U.S. Democratic Party presidential nomination.

Clinton, who is trailing Obama in the five-month state-by-state nominating contest, will probably stop short of formally suspending or ending her White House bid. The AP report came as the last two states, Montana and South Dakota, were voting in the nominating contests that have put Obama within a few dozen delegates of the number he needs to clinch the nomination.

The AP report quoted the campaign officials as saying that for all intents and purposes, Clinton's campaign was over.

After returning to Indianapolis, Linda she began her own law firm, which quickly grew into a successful criminal and civil law practice and became the first woman partner to have her name on the door at one of the city’s 10 largest law firms.

She is known statewide for winning a record settlement of over $14 million for the State of Indiana against a Corporation whose illegal practices killed tons of fish in the White River. The winnings have been used to help restore the river and improve our environment.

Later, she stood up for mom-and-pop gas station owners against the multinational Shell Oil corporation and won. Linda has also won special commendations and recognition for leading investigations into mortgage fraud, nursing home practices, and consumer fraud. Throughout her career, Linda has never backed down from a fight. She’s taken on multi–billion dollar corporations to protect Indiana residents, our environment, and our values. As Attorney General, her experience and passion will be critical as she addresses the fight against meth, helps ease the mortgage crisis, and keeps Indiana families safe.

When you listen to Linda Pence you hear a determined and effective individual who is tireless and relentless in her pursuit of her goals. It’s time we put her experience and leadership to work as our Attorney General.

Check out her web site because every one says, "You Want Linda on Your Side."

Bush 3rd Term

On CNN's Larry King’s interview with Jon Stewart, Larry brought up the subject of the primaries and asked him if America was ready for a woman or a black president.

Jon looked at him quizzically and said "This is such a non-question.
Did anyone ask us in 2000 if Americans were ready for a moron?"

People generally take up arms and fight only if they have strong reasons to do so.
If you want to deal with them successfully, you must first find out what their problems are.
It is only until you deal with those problems that you can expect them to lay down their arms.
To fight them does not solve the innitial problems - and it is always much more expensive.

Edwards and Obama

You gotta love this. . .

John Edwards made a surprise appearance with Barack Obama in Grand Rapids, Mich., as the Illinois senator campaigns in a critical general election battleground state. Edwards, who received a thunderous ovation when Obama introduced him to a crowd of several thousand, said, "brothers and sisters, we must come together as Democrats" to defeat McCain. "We are here tonight because the Democratic voters have made their choice, and so have I."

Why? In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves in others – through the power of film. This is one of the ways global change can happen. Click Here

Last Man StandingBarack Obama Wins Allen County

With 294 of 294 precincts reporting in Allen County, Barack Obama has 56% of the vote as compared to 44% for Hillary Clinton.

In 2004, there were a total of 8,657 votes cast in the Democratic primary in Allen County. The GOP posted 21,649 votes.

This year, the GOP posted 20,122 (1,527 less than in 2004). However, the Democratic vote increased by 53,877 to a whopping 62,534.

.

Hillary Clinton Wins Indiana by Just Under 2%

Clinton 50.9% vs. Obama 49.1% / - a much smaller victory than was anticipated.

This all reminds us that a person who does not know when to quit or change course may lack some of the executive ability to run the country. We certainly have seen that in "W". While we do like and would support Hillary, it might be better to change course in style than . . do what she is doing. Lots of women (and men) felt great pride in voting for a strong positive woman and we respect those feelings and their perceptions. At this time, however, "Letting go" would be a very positive thing to do.
